Katsushi SHIMABUKURO

Katsushi Shimabukuro lives and works in Miyagijima, one of the islands of Okinawa. He expresses through his ceramics the colours from the nature surounding him. Clear blue and soft pink, both of which are the potter’s signature colours, are reminiscent of the ocean or the twilight sky of tropical Okinawa. These unique colours and the flowing lines of glaze running freely on the surface of his works define Shimabukuro’s style, together with their sharp and elegant shapes. Being a son of a professional craftsman of shisa (a traditional folklore sculpture of the region), and engaging in the research on the local earth and clay at Okinawa Prefectural University of the Arts, Shimabukuro updates the traditional Okinawan pottery culture with a more contemporary perspective.
