Koutaro IKURA

Hotarude is a technique derived from ‘Sukashibori’, a method used to create effects after pouring a clear glaze over the ‘Sukashibori’ porcelain and when it is placed under light, the parts that were cut open transmits light resulting in a breathtakingly beautiful piece.

Ikura developed this technique further and creates two types of Hotarude. One is called ‘Mizu no Hana’, works with lines created on the surface and another is called ‘Mizu Hotaru’, works that are produced using round chips.

Ikura’s creations show the immaculate beauty and as a result the warmth of the traditional ‘Seihakuji’ (also known as celadon and white porcelain) colours stand out.
